First thing’s first, Happy 2018! I hope this first post of the new year finds you on the road to happiness, success, and new goals for the future. Me….. I’m gonna try to be a little less petty and a little more understanding…… SYKE! My cake is baked, and I’m just trying to out gym my flaming hot Cheetos habit. So on to the topic du jour.
We’re almost a year into Trumpmerica…. but what I’m here to talk about today isn’t about Donald J. Trump, or even politics as a focus. Politics and Politicians are largely nothing more than polished talking points and phrases brought to you by the highest bidder or the latest opinion polls. The look the part, talk the part, and are extremely careful to NOT get caught saying or doing anything that would tell you how they REALLY feel personally. So not only are the words and statements carefully choses and written by their army of Public Relations staff…. but so are those that are selected to go out in public and represent them when times get tough. But it’s not just politicians, it’s Joe neighbor and Mary Co-Worker.
See often times, especially in the new age of slur-less racism, people are all too comfortable to hold on to their racist thoughts and actions, so long as they don’t overtly act on them. (So they think). It’s still overwhelmingly acceptable to BE racist, it’s just not acceptable to be PROUDLY racist. So how do you balance BEING racist but simultaneously being AGAINST racism? You break glass and pull out your OBF.
Your ONE BLACK FRIEND.
They are the ones who have made the conscious decision that the path to success, promotion, fame, and prosperity is the one that puts the Black face on the anti-Black messaging. They are the ones that believe their position in society is proof that the screams of inequality, racism, bigotry, and injustice are just the irrelevant shouts of lazy do nothings who need to do as they did to “make it”. Prime examples include Paris Dennard, “Pastor” Mark Burns, Larry Elder, Sen Tim Scott (SC), Clarance Thomas, Dr. Ben Carson, Ron Christie, Alan Keyes, Ward Connerly……. I can go on and on. Let me be clear. I am NOT including Black REPUBLICANS in this group or conversation. People like Colin Powell and Michael Steele. Let us also just mention that many Black folks were strong Republicans back before the civil rights movement and when you had Conservative / Moderate / Liberal Republicans AND Democrats. Remember, this is NOT a political post.
Let me be clear, having White friends, listening to Hootie and the Blowfish, liking John Mayer, even having good credit….. don’t make you the OBF. Carlton and Hillary Banks were not the OBF. You know the OBF. You knew him or her in elementary school, in High School, in College. They “Rushed” instead of pledged. While most fellas got fades, they kept a home cut low fro….. and brushed it backwards. They didn’t kick it with the crew. But most noticeably, they embraced a role in their chosen social circle as the ONE BLACK FRIEND.
They are on social media every day. You aren’t quite sure if they believe the things they are saying and sharing or if they are doing so to try to continue to get praise from their social circle. When you get into a heated exchange with a White acquaintance, they quickly tag THIS guy to vouch for their “hey come tell them I’m not racist….. you’ve known me for _______ years”. They talk about how Black folks shouldn’t run from cops if they don’t want to get shot. They will take the side of their oppressor at every opportunity.
We all KNOW this person….. now the question is: Is it our obligation to “wake” them up, or do we put them to sleep when the revolution comes?
