A phrase you hear often when it comes to the economy and immigration is “Taking jobs”. Illegal Immigrants come over hear and “steal” jobs. You hear phrases like this all the time to the point where you probably never pay them any mind. The discussion, if one ever occurs, often goes directly into what kind of jobs are we talking about. The two to three sentences later it’s a discussion about getting welfare and free health care and congratulations, you’re off the rails and that train reaches it’s destination: Nowhere!
The real point of this “Debate” is too often overlooked. What the FUCK exactly is “Taking” a job? Every job I’ve ever held, I had to GET. Compose a resume, fill out an application, interview a couple times, and then get that most amazing phone call that says…… “You’re hired!”. In other words….. Someone HAD a job to give, and CHOSE to give it to someone else. I’ve never been sitting at Starbucks or in line at Target and seen some eager young entrepeneur just walk behind the counter or register and relieve the person in that position of their payroll and time card. I may be wrong, if you’re seen such an action, please contact me. I’ve got PLENTY of questions for you. The point is, Jobs aren’t being “Taken”, they are being “given”.
I see these jobs being given out every day. There’s an area about half a mile where day laborers gather at the crack of dawn hoping to get work for the day. The HOA contractors who do the trash twice a week and landscaping….. not exactly a diverse workforce. When I lived in Nebraska, I started to see an influx of hispanics with all the agricultural jobs to the point where we had hispanic grocery stores and BOMB Cali-style taco shops in town. Were they all rolling up on the farmers and meat packing plants kicking good tax paying middle class White American’s out of their jobs in a revolution I wasn’t made aware of? I mean I don’t watch Fox News so please let me know.
Capitalism and AMERICA have always required a depressed / oppressed labor force. Now can you say the willingness of “Illegal Immigrants” to work for less makes it harder for all legal workers, and certainly that isn’t a completely invalid point. However this is a chicken / egg argument. You can’t exactly get mad at someone who is running a business wanting to pay as little as possible to get the job done. However that doesn’t mean you accept the rules as written, or more importantly, ignore then rules as they exist. You can’t have labor laws and then ignore them unless your goal is to LOOK like you care about the labor force but you really stand beside management. From child labor laws, to unfair / unsafe working conditions, to minimum wages, to family medial leave, the only thing labor has TAKEN is a great sense of decency and humanity.
So please, next time you find yourself listening to someone talking about “Build that Wall” or “Job Stealers” or how “we need to bring jobs back to America”, remember; I’ve never seen a job walk onto a boat and leave on a permanent vacation. I’ve never seen someone go from unemployed to employed by gunpoint. America was built on free labor, but it doesn’t have to remain that way.
