Terrorism, it’s not just Bombs

The use of terrorism is as old as time.

This week there was an apparent suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in an act of terrorism that killed 22 people in Manchester England.   Trumpmericans came out of the woodwork on my social media feed.   Suddenly emboldened to flex their pride in the Muslim bans and Nationalist policies of the Trump administration.   Personally, I was glad to know my Trump voting friends were still alive since the daily scandals of private meetings with Russian officials, Congressional investigations and independent prosecutors pretty much drove them under a large pile of rocks for the past 120 days.   But that’s another story for another time.

The use of terrorism is as old as time.  When a large, organized, well supplied force is opposed by a much smaller and ill equipped group, it’s almost a guarantee you will get these kind of acts.  The media would like us to believe that terrorists and terrorism only has one script.  It’s Radical Islamic Terrorism.  Radical Islam is at WAR with “Western Values.”  That script is strange brown men with names we can’t pronounce doing bad things to innocent people of European descent who just want to live their sweet pure lives in peace.  Now I won’t deny that is one form of terrorism, it certainly isn’t the only one.

“The use of unlawful violence and intimidation………”, does that ring a bell?  Betty Shelby, shoots and kills Terrance Crutcher in Tulsa Oklahoma.  She is found not guilty.  Eric Garner was put in a choke hold and killed on a sidewalk for allegedly selling loose cigarettes.  The Officer who killed Garner was not even brought to trial.   Both of the above still have their jobs.  Richard Collins was killed by a radical White Supremacist at a bus stop at 3am.  Radical Christians have walked into churches and clinics shooting and killing doctors who preformed abortions.  Radical Law Enforcement officers arrest, beat, lock up and shoot young minorities.   Just yesterday, two men were killed coming to the defense of the victim of a Radical Nationalist in Portland.  All of this is Terrorism.  Little to none of this is accurately called Terrorism.

America is supposedly the land of the free, home of the brave.   The Land of Opportunity and milk and honey.  A Place where the only thing standing in your way of success is the amount of effort you put into something.   That is the America I stand for and will pick up a gun and fight to defend.   It is also the America I believe we are a ways away from achieving.   It is the Nation that, despite being a part of a race that has more reason that any to despise, I still believe we can become.

The MOST needed step that we need to take in that direction is the step that the power structure in this country seems most unwilling to take.  That step requires we admit that we are just as guilty of past and present transgressions.  An admission that while we are at times victims…. we are also just as guilty.  A statement that says I will listen to you and make an effort to empathize with you.  Perhaps that kind of TRUTH Bomb, is what we fear most.
